John A. Sweeney

Transformative Foresight Lead

Dr. John A. Sweeney is the UNESCO Chair for Futures Studies in Anticipatory Governance and Sustainable Policymaking at Westminster International University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He also currently serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of World Futures Review: A Journal of Strategic Foresight and Senior Advisor on Foresight for CMI - Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation. John currently also serves as faculty for the University of Houston’s Master’s Program in Strategic Foresight and Chiang Mai University’s School of Public Policy.

As a practitioner, consultant, and educator, John has organized, managed, and facilitated workshops and seminars, multi-stakeholder projects, and foresight games and simulations in 50 countries on six continents in-person and online with participants from all around the world. He has engaged with numerous universities, international development and humanitarian aid agencies, nonprofit foundations, Fortune 500 companies, and educational and cultural organizations, such as the Asian Development Bank, CDC, IAEA, IFRC, INTERPOL, GIZ, The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, NESTA, WHO, and numerous UN agencies across various regions. Additionally, John has experience working with public sector and civil service foresight and innovation units, and he has instructed foresight courses for the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Dubai Future Foundation.

John is a member of the World Futures Studies Federation and the Association of Professional Futurists. His work has been published in Futures, Futures & Foresight Science, The Journal of Futures Studies, World Futures Review, and other academic and media outlets.
